Hoverfly Hornet size

I agree that this is a Hoverfly of Hornet size. See my observation of the same species seen this last weekend. It spent most the weekend coming and going to the same plant / flower..

Hi Paul

I had a look at your post - I'd say we've got the same insect here. Your post's a bit confusing, though. Several identifications for the same creature, and a date of 1980! I wonder where that came from - iSpot usually picks up the date from the picture. If you get a chance, I'd get in there and edit it a bit. You also need to allocate it to invertibrates intsead of "?"
