Description:

Rather hairless, elongated, black with a red tail and somewhat dozy - a cuckoo bee which the hairy relatively narrow hind tibia confirm. The hint of yellow on the thorax - and size (not exceptionally large for a bumblebee) - i/d this as a male. The females are huge, usually with an all-black thorax. This is the only red-tailed cuckoo bee here, so again it is an easy species i/d.
Fans of the traditional i/d key approach may try step one, counting the segments on the antennae on this photo (you should get to 13) - not that easy, even in full resolution! Now try it on a squirming bee in a tube...
