Can you give the size? As you probably know, this is a rare and declining moth and there aren't supposed to be any in your part of the country. Did you check the hind wing?
Have just been to measure the path to which it flew out of my moth trap... about 18mm (could check because of the dark patches on the path in the photo.)I'm new to this and had no idea it was rare/not meant to bein SW but it was the only one I could see in my book that looked anything like it! I didn't really see it fly, only where it landed, so have no idea about it's hind wing. I will put my trap on tonight to see if it comes back!
How do I check its hind wing without hurting it if I get the chance, please!
If you put the moth in a pot in the bottom of the fridge for about 15 mins. when you take it out, it should be compliant enough for you to quickly pinch the fore wing and lift it up to reveal the hind wing. You have to work quickly though as they soon warm up again.
Thank you...very helpful. I will try that some time. The moth didn't come back last night!
