Really nice set of photos, David. Quite different to quadrifasciatus when you see a male as well as this.

PS: Looks like Creeping Thistle, a favourite of Conopids. Spear Thistle never seems to attract them, in my experience.

Bother, creeping thistle of course is what meant, I got over-excited by the Conops !!! I'll see if I can edit it.
