We watched this sit still for minutes then launch an attack! Very impressive Fly, could anyone tell us what it is please, thanks!

From the notes i must assume it is the same fly....is it possible "it" tricked you? Because they seem 2 different individuals and maybe even different species. Picture one and two (without prey) are the same creature, we can tell by the grains of sand on the eyes. The one with prey has't got any grain of sand on the eyes(could be a result of the capture-flight)but compared with picture one (facing the same direction)the beard of the first one seems blacker. The legs seem to have more extensive black markings and darker meta tarsi. The fine white hair on the legs with nr 3 seems to be hardly visible with 1 and 2. One and two are M atricapillus, 3 looks like a M cingulatus (but not tipical).
