Description:

quite large black with a red striped insects, a cross between a slug and millipede, but very fast moving

    a beetle larva (Berberomeloe majalis)
    Confidence: It might be this.

    Confidence: I'm as sure as I can be.

Berberomeloe majalis is a member of the family Meloidae (Blister Beetles). You can see some photos on Flickr here and some information on the Spanish Wikipedia site here (translated).

Many thanks David,
Co-oincidently today, we have seen 3 more beetles here in Castelo del Vides in Portugal.
One Dutch camper saw a pair, as he was pitching his tent, and was very worried about them biting him, so i willbe able to tell him what they are in the morning
