Very slow moving, about 8cm long and 12mm diameter, dark spotted regions on back, "bumps" for feet but no visible legs, eats laurel leaves and probably capable of swallowing an unsuspecting gardener at one gulp.

If you change

the category to Invertebrates, you'll have a better chance of an identification: the Clever People tend to use filters to focus on their particular interest.
The size you quote is suggestive of one of the larger Hawk-moths - have a look at pictures of Elephant HM, does that look anything like?
