Thank you for helping me with this identification - I really struggled to find it. Is there a difference between males and females? I thought this species had yellow markings at each side of its abdomen and clear wings, whereas this one appears to have no yellow markings and dark smudges on its wings.
Eristalis have such variable markings on the abdomen that that feature usually adds little to an ID. For rupium, the heavy wing shade is a key feature, together with the hind metatarsus being pale. It's very much an upland and northern species, so few pictures on iSpot...a nice find!
Males, incidentaly, have eyes which touch atop the head, females have eyes widely separated, as in this one.

Thank you for all of this - that's all very interesting indeed, and good to know it's relatively localised.
PS You have some absolutely stunning photos there - absolutely pin sharp.
I put my photos on my website called insectsofscotland.com. They are not a patch on yours. I try and be as accurate as I can with the IDs, although I'm sure some of them are a bity iffy, but I get a lot of enjoyment from it all the same.
