Big fly

Wing length 22mm, length 27mm, Thorax 7mm. At first thought it was a hoverfly but Ball& Morris (Britains Hoverfly's (2013) state that Britains largest hoverfly is Volucella zonaria with a wing length 15.5-19.5mm. This is much bigger and the markings are very different.Any help appreciated,Thanks.

Yes this is a tabanid - not a hoverfly - as likely as not T. sudeticus but I don't do them from photos I fear
