Graphomya of some kind (there are two species).
I am just starting to try to ID the insects in my garden and had no idea where to start with this one. I can see "my insect" when I google on Graphomya so very many thanks for your help.
To get further you need to look for a smallish bristle on the upper front surface of the middle tibia. G. minor has one, G. maculata does not. But it is not very easy, and certainly not do-able in the field.
Thank you. That is very informative and lets me know that I won't be able to easily identify further as I suspect that insect has moved on now!
It has been really good for me to just know that it may be one or the other as I am starting from a low base. I would very much like to be able to keep a record of what I see in the garden as I have a wide variety of plants and don't use insecticides. So I want to build my knowledge and records a bit at a time. i-spot is a great site although I think I may need to buy a good insect book as well.
