I wonder whether those in the first picture are Chironomid midges, which ought to be common on Svalbard, I would imagine. No more than a suggestion, though.

I suggested to Barbara that she put these on iSpot as insects are rather uncommon in Svalbard - I only saw 2 flies in 10 days
