I know an image of the leaf would have been helpful...... Memory says it was long and relatively narrow with smooth edges and no markings.

Rutland Water

Unlikely to be D. maculata, soil is alkaline and there's no heathland. Never been recorded here as far as I know. Not sure what it is, though!

D. praetermissa or its fuchsii hybrid.

I was thinking it might be the hybrid.

My first thought was ...

... Dactylorhiza praetermissa, but the central lobe seemed a bit large, so the second thought was Dactylorhiza x grandis, but I put this observations to one side until I had time to look into to the books (still pending).
