This looks to be a close match to the Large Dark Prominent (Notodonta torva), but may be a similar species.......
Thanks Andy. Do you know what they do when they pupate? There were 3 on a Black Poplar that's in a large pot in my garden, but they all vanished - I wondered whether they had been predated or perhaps to pupate they drop off and burrow or lose themselevs in the leaf litter...?
A double-brooded species - egg stage in May, larval stage in June & July and late August & September. They pupate underground for the winter.
