Unidentified Cocoon

Observed: 2nd July 2013 By: Hels_Bells
Cocoon 003
Description:

Please can you help to identify what might of made this cocoon, a colleague brought it in for me to identify but I have never seen anything like this before. This cocoon was found attached to a wooden trellis covered in ivy. Inside the cocoon there was a pupa shell, possibly from a Poplar Hawk Moth as there is a poplar tree close by. The cocoon looks to be constructed out of fibres from the ivy branches.

Hi Hels_Bells,

I noticed your cocoon earlier today. Just now on ukleps I noticed the cocoon of the Green-brindled Crescent bears a resemblence. I havent seen such a cocoon before. Was the pupal exuvia from within really big? If it was hawkmoth sized it might rule out GBC.

Cathal.
