Lesser House-fly (Fannia canicularis)
Description:

On a hot day there were lots of these small flies on the leaves of wild raspberries. Can anyone help with an ID, please?

Two species

The second picture is a hoverfly, perhaps a Platycheirus, but the first are a different family...Muscids, Anthomyiids or similar.

Complete Guide...

Worth a guess, I suppose, but bearing in mind there are 7000 odd fly species alone in the UK, the scope of a guide like Chinnery's Complete Guide will always be rather limited. Interesting use of the word complete!

Two letters missing?

I'm beginning to think that "Incomplete Guide ..." would be more appropriate.

Edit: typo (letter missing!)
