This certainly looks like the lily beetles on my lilies. Are there larvae too? Their pile their excrement on their backs in a slimy mess. I wonder whether this unpleasant habit defends the larvae against parasitoides (parasitic insects that lay their eggs in larvae) or maybe other predators?

The larvae on ours were much earlier in the year. The excrement is a defence/camouflage mechanism I believe.
