It could be a trick of the light but this looks to be a very dark individual. You can see how it would be possible, with a little more melanin, for it to look black and be one of these legendary 'black' red squirrels we are hearing so much about these days.

to be honest I thought this was a fairly typical one, have seen paler and deeper coloured individuals. Cant say Ive seen anything approaching black yet unless one that ran across the road one day with snow on the ground and that explains that. This is pretty typical of the ones around here.
