Having looked into the name it seems from various references that both names are used, does any one know which one is currently correct.

When it comes to nomenclatural issues there is a right name - though sometimes it can be hard to work out. But when it comes to issues of classification, it's more a case of the accepted name, rather than the correct name.
Nowadays biologists have a strong preference for monophyletic taxa, which makes it likely that in the future the accepted name will be increasingly Dioscorea communis.
