Floppy tree

Observed: 3rd July 2013 By: seona

A tree down the wooded farm track in my garden, close to an old hazel tree. It might be a walnut I think we planted one about ten years ago. Any info greatly appreciated, thanks.

Species with which Walnut (Juglans regia) interacts

Certainly looks like Walnut...

...what with those pinnate leaves, and knobbly grey twigs.

To check, can you cut the twig in half lengthwise?

Walnuts have "chambered pith" so the central core will appear to have lots of little pockets in it.

Ash, a similar-leaved tree, has solid twigs.
