Description:

Dorsal fin placed quite a way back. Tail fin quite deeply indented. Could be dace perhaps, maybe.... The photos are of different fish. They certainly look to me to be the same species, but I guess it's possible they aren't.

the image....

...of the fish in the foreground pic 1 could well be a Roach - notice the red of the pelvic, anal fins and lower part of the caudal fin. I think you have both though - the darker coloured fish look like Dace.

Fish

I reckon the fish in the foreground in photo#1 could be a Chub.
It may be out of place but we have some in a local pond which for some reason people have released.
The fin placing looks right anyway.

Chub

I think Chub would exhibit quite a dark looking tail fin, which these lack.

Dace

You both mention Dace, I believe they are generally associated with flowing water and wouldn't normally (although you can't rule out introduction I suppose) be found in a canal.

I agree...

...the back of pic 1 does look like bream as does pic 2 - still think the foreground one is Roach. We have Dace in the Military Canal that are regularly caught here in Kent. So not necessarily uncommon in Canals.

I seem to have generated

I seem to have generated quite a debate. Thanks for all contributions. I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment.
