Bank vole

Welcome Peter to the heady world of mammals on iSpot - branching out from invertebrates then!

Your little fellow is a bank vole, note the small eyes and ears and stubby nose (indicate vole); also the russet brown fur and short tail show this to be a bank vole rather than a field vole.

Tail length

Hi Graham, I know you know what you're talking about but just to clarify for anyone else that isn't particularly familiar with voles... the bank vole does indeed have a short tail (about half its body length) but the field vole has an even shorter tail (about a third of its body length).

Voles

Thanks, I had a senior moment there, I'd been talking to someone about a pygmy shrew on the phone a few minutes before and got confused. I had meant to say the tail is around half the body length; shorter in the field vole. Thanks for clarifying.
