Not quite sure how to i/d as Soldier Fly, never mind species! Need that out of print book.

Soldierflies have wing veins crowded to front edge and small discal cell - quite distinct once seen. Chloromyia is an easy species to id. It is the only (British) metallic green soldierfly that lacks spines on the scutellum AND has hairy eyes. Wing venation, lack of spines and hairy eyes all very clear in this image.
