Looking in my new book, it mentioned that this colouring was female; hence my addition. [Collins British Insects]

Landmarks

Colour develops with insect stage and maturity as well as Photography and light !! :-) these go from whiter to brown whether the wings or full or partial is a more reliable anatamomical feature
