Any help with this beetle would be appreciated - looks like a miniature chafer. Approx 1cm long.
No interactions present.
A Welsh chafer in Wales! I am just starting recording on this particular site, Steve - that is (hopefully) a great record. Certainly looks very close from the other images. Are there any very similar species?
This really isn't my area of expertise, so can't comment on looky-likies, but the shape of body and legs, with those long hooked claws, matches my Oxon specimens (that were identified for me by a real expert!). I had not seen anything like it before, which is why I sought advice. It's good to have tame experts around when you need them. Hopefully one will confirm your specimen.

Yes hope we get an agreement on this one. Will also refer it to our local Coleoptera recorder. Thanks Steve
There seems to be confusion between Welsh Chafer and Garden Chafer on iSpot:
I don't have the expertise (or the inclination) to trawl through and check!
Thanks Steve. That is helpful and needs to be considered. Have looked into it a bit this morning and the garden chafer is distinguished by a more green coloured head and is 1-2mm bigger. This one definitely had a black head. I obviously need more help on this though so will look more into it after breakfast and a cup of tea!
It seems that the genus Hoplia is differentiated from all other similar British 'chafer' genera by having a single prominent hooked claw to the last leg leg (as in your image). All other GB 'chafer' genera have two claws, side by side. See text at:
There is only one species of Hoplia in Britain. Check the claws and it should be easy to identify! Sorted.
wonderful Clare! I love to see local species featured here. I have recently found a new site in London with plenty of creatures to keep me busy this summer
