Description:

This is one of the paler Dactylorhiza orchids on the reserve so am presuming it is a Common Spotted-Orchid but there do seem to be a lot of Common Spotted-Orchid x Southern Marsh-orchids which are a deeper purple. I am aware that this group crosses and recrosses etc.

*bites tongue*

..but no! I can't resist it.

An orchid with bifocals?

Or do you need bifocals to see it clearly?

Or is it merely bifurcated?

*laughs*

Aw, I'm only teasing...

...and it's a lovely word.

Bit like "frondescence" which is another name for "phyllody" (pronounced Phil Oddy, brother of Bill)(or is it Phil O'dee? I am not sure - someone will no doubt correct me) which refers to the abnormal development of floral parts into leaf-like parts.

It's also good to read your comments about the coloration and crossing of these orchids.

There have been several Observations lately that I have looked at and thought "pff, far too deep a colour to be Common Spotted" yet people have Agreed with them.

Presumably a lot of those were actually crosses?
