Description:

I was amazed to find this Chiton on a Dog Whelk. They have always seemed so sedentary, hardly appearing to move. Certainly its grazing opportunities must be limited.
I would love to have marked it and follow it through the following days.
Picture four shows another, nearby, specimen on a more normal substrate - the girdles seem to be deployed differently.
I now read there are suspicions that they orient compass-wise, graze wide and 'home', rather like Limpets.
