Entomologist and biological recorder
Hi Mick, what are the distinguishing features that make this D. flavifrons - there are quite a few other species in that genus aren't there? Not a group I know at all so would be interested to know how you arrived at the ID, is there a key available?
All I have in respect to Diptera references, (non Syrpidae) is M. Chinery's Insects of W.E., Paul Beuk's Diptera.info site and of course the many kindly folk of iSpot, plus many other internet sources. I do understand where youre coming from and I do agree that many an Arthropod cannot be positively ID'd from a photo alone. The buts to me are manyfold, so unless the phenotype is replicated in other species of this Genus and reference made to that effect where do I go? All can say in defence of my ID claim is that it is based on Paul Beuk's agreed determination of the images on Diptera.info. Other than that I have to refer back to the phenotype issue.
