Description:

Hoverfly, about 12 cm long. Black legs, hairy. White tail, orange band across middle and down the sides of the body. Pale yellow face.

Volucella bombylans

Excellent photos. The plumose arista (present in Volucella, but not other bumblebee mimics) can be clearly seen.

This looks like the form of V.bombylans which mimics Bombus lucorum. Another common form mimics B.lapidarius.

Saw one yesterday, but didn't have the camera to hand.
