this lizard was seen in the foothills of the Jura mountains in France. It was in a fairly boggy area near a stream and seemed very tame. My query is, is it just a merlanistic common lizard which has lost its tail

You are exactly right. It is "just" a melanistic common lizard which has lost its tail. Really nice to see a melanistic one though.

You should add another ID with the scientific name Zootoca vivipara.
