It's hard not to anthropomorphise, but it does seem that one of our garden blackbirds has performed an interesting piece of brain-work.
He obviously knows that I am involved in the appearance of food at the feeder. I've regularly heard him "pipping" with apparent excitement when, having put food down, I move away and he darts in for a feed.
Twice recently, I've heard his alarm call and gone out to find and evict marauding cats. I will also check the feeder as I pass.
Now, when I appear in the kitchen in the morning, he will perch nearby and start making alarm calls. It really seems as if he's worked out that if he makes the noise, I will go out, and food will appear.
I think I've become a blackbird's lab rat...
