British list of Syrphidae - Hoverflies

----------------------------------------------------------
I am not an expert on Syrphidae so if you have any queries on ID's please address them to the Ispot team. Should there be any errors in this list of any kind please don't hesitate to let me know I will do my best to but them right.

Last but not least, should there be any images* of those not already depicted on Ispot please let me know via the comment box.
*Only of the hoverfly type.

If you know the Genus click on it, it will save a bit of scrolling. You will also find a good few links back to the Genera list.

List

Thanks to Mick for the work on this! Is the idea that pictures will gradually build up for all the species? That would be a good idea, like a field guide. The trouble is that two of the first few pictures when you press on Baccha elongata actually show Neoascia species, and Platycheirus amplus seems to bring up albimanus instead. A nice concept, but it certainly needs to be accurate, if that is the idea.

List

Hi Ian,
I see you noted this and many more anomalies there are too. I'm trying to avoid them when I can see there is doubt over a species. I am not suggesting wrongly ID'ed just those where no agreement has been reached yet are still placed in a specific carousel. Apart from the obvious good thing about the links to species, it does highlight the incorrect placements. So I am thinking that maybe the Ispot team and all the experts can act on this and place the offending hovers in a Genus only carousel. Anyway it is back to the grindstone and I'll see what I can do as and when needed.

MickETalbot's picture

Resolved

If you check the links out now Ian, you will find all has been resolved re wrong ID's creeping in. The learned folk on the Ispot team made it simple for me, (re the dictionary links), and I thank them most kindly. However should you, or anyone spot anything amiss with the list please don't hesitate to let me know.

ophrys's picture

Pipiza lugubris

This one is not a definite photo of said species...problem of experts in one area identifying in another area!

Chrysogaster virescens is also not a definite photo of the species.

Dasysyrphus pinastri is the same.

Chrysogaster virescen

Chrysogaster virescens is still given in the taxonomy links, thats one you will have to take up with the Ispot ID team. Pipiza lugubris has been amended by the team and now myself. Have not checked Dasysyrphus pinastri yet, if it has been amended by the team then I will remove the link. If it has not then as I am no expert I will have to leave that one with you too. Many thanks for the corrections, spot anymore let me know.

Thanks again,

Chrysogaster virescen

Ian,
Images still accepted as C. virescen. Dasysyrphus pinastr has been amended.

spellings, links etc

Hi Mick, are you still working on this? If so after a quick look I can see your spellings of Meligramma guttatum & trianguliferum are different to the current British usage and both are on ispot. Also no link to Didea fasciata, Xanthandrus and Xanthogramma st.
If your project is still ongoing I'm happy to pitch in and look at it more closely and add some stuff

cheers, Jeremy

Spellings

Hi Jeremy,
I am in hospital at the moment, problems with my diabetes. So yes please feel free to pitch in to sort, add, in fact do what needs doing, as for the moment I am restricted to the time I am allowed on line. Should be out soon and will be able to have a closer look myself, but for now I thank you most kindly, best wishes,

Xanthogramma st.

Hi Jeremy,
Out of hospital now and have made corrections to the errors you noted.

No agreement on X. stackelbergi, so I have left it with no link.

jeremyr's picture

'agreement'

Hi Mick I'm glad you're up and about again,

Sorry I thought your criteria was purely to provide a link to what ispot offered on the subject, rather than what's been ticked as 'agreed'. Seems a bit odd if you're including anything that's been ticked while ignoring something that's been identified by a specialist expert. But I thought you were referring people to the ispot team in case of queries rather than deciding yourself so sorry if I've misunderstood. I don't think a ticked box carries more authority than an expert's comment so it's not for me, but good luck anyway

cheers, Jeremy

tree

thanks for your explanation Mick. It wasn't so much that particular obs I was thinking of - I share Ian's concern about accuracy, but was worried you'd therefore decided not include self-authored posts that had no overt agreements, a huge shame especially as the largest portion of those 'are' in fact Ian's, and include much that's difficult to find let alone identify. I'm still not sure how the taxon tree irons out inaccuracies but if it's appearance is your doing then very well done. I was delighted to see it, thinking it a peace offering from the Interactionists..

Others I can immediately see are Meligramma gut. & tri, Xylota jak, Lejogaster met, Chrysogaster cem. and I'm certain there are more

Get back to you on this, have family visiting. Have made the missed links, catch you laters....

MickETalbot's picture

From the begining

Hi Jeremy,
I have to confess that when I first put the list up I was not aware of the taxon tree. I would like to think I had something to do with its implementation but I doubt it very much. However it was and still is a very useful lead to positively identified flora and fauna.

The system I initially used for linking to species was the iSpot nodes. Unfortunately this method dragged in all manner of anomalies and because of my lack of expertise made it very hard work for me in assuring all was in order. (Check Ians comments on the latter)

Your comments have not referred to errors, with the exception of the outdated nomenclature, which really is down to not keeping up to date. So yes I am truly grateful for the update on that score. As for missed species links, not errors, more oversights for which I am also constantly checking. In fact I have made a general request asking for pointers to new to iSpot Syrphidae species observations, plus any existing I might have missed. Of course I have also asked for help re any obvious errors too. That plea goes out to you to Jeremy. I am not an expert and I am totally dependent on good folk such as yourself.

Much respect,
