Description:

Bright orange, not certain whether it's a fungus or eggs. I'd guess at eggs.

Simon, this looks like the Nettle Leaf gall. Puccinia urticata

...as long as it did to get five little birds, I won't hold my breath!
There's just so much to learn, and I;m interested in almost all of it (even slugs).

Nettle gall

Alan, I've moved to you as quickly as I could. True enough, I should have spotted it before, but then I'd not done my posts of this delightful 'gall', even so I had suggested to Simon that it is urticata.
