The Plant List, http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/search?q=iris+germanica , says it should be Iris x germanica, and in Stace it has Iris germanica and says there is no overall name for the hybrid group. Should it have the x in the name or not as Stace says that the true I. germanica is only one of a group of garden hybrids?
... a hybridogenous species the use of the x is optional, and is commonly omitted. (Hybridisation at some point in the past is involved in the ancestry of many plant species.)
In the case of Iris germanica its origins are obscure, and while generally assumed to be a hybrid of uncertain parentage (Iris pallida and Iris variegata are sometimes mentioned) its hybrid status seems not to be definitely confirmed.
There is also a distinction to be drawn between Iris germanica in the narrow sense, and tall bearded irises as a group.
