I've just looked it up in my flower book and it mentions 'Mossy Saxifrage' as a single species - has this species been split up further, or have other 'mossy saxifrages' got their own names?
... Saxifraga hypnoides (mossy saxifrage), Saxifraga rosacea (Irish saxifrage) and Saxifraga cespitosa (tufted saxifrage), and I presume other species outside Britain and Ireland.
[I miscounted - it's 2 species and 2 subspecies (of rosacea.]
You could look up the ranges to see if that helps with identification, but I expect that garden escapes muddy the waters.
Thank you, as this is a brownfield site that used to have flowerbeds, I'm leaning towards a garden escape.
