Unidentified Hawk Moths

Observed: 15th June 2009 By: Matt PMatt P’s reputation in Invertebrates

Pair of unidentified Hawk Moths, see mid-June last year on the wall of our house.I presume that being "tied" like this, that they were mating ? However, I was amazed by the lenghth of time they stayed in this position (total of four days)before they finally separated and flew off. The weather was fine and dry at the time, so probably not due to that. Is this normal ? It seems to present a high risk of predation to remain so for such a length of time.

Presumed to be mating, but surprising length of time (4 days) to remain in the same position.
Is this normal ?
