Is this common in the back garden?
It's common in mine! At some point this will have been planted in your garden, or possibly grown from seed. It's a lovely early-flowering perennial and comes in lots of colours and some different flower shapes. It's also a wild plant, usually blue, and the garden varieties frequently escape into the wild.
