oil beetle

It's definitely an oil beetle, and I think you're probably correct with Meloe proscarabeus, but I'm not certain I can rule out Meloe violaceus from the photos. Hopefully someone who knows these species better than I do can comment.

Meloe proscarabeus

Hi,

looks about right tome for Meloe proscarabeus, note the heavy punctures on the pronotum and the almost straight base.
