If you have any plant books this is likely to be referred to as Ranunculus ficaria - plants sometimes change their scientific/Latin names.
Thank you Mark. I only have a small plant guide (came free in The Observer!) and I couldn't find this plant in there at all. Might need to invest a proper guide now.
The latest name is Ficaria verna, but only Stace 3 has that so far, I suspect.
I put in Ficaria verna - ispot must have changed it I didn't notice so that's why I added the comment
