Description:

I saw this small beetle in Kent (by reculver towers) it was in the plants not near sand but right next to the car park. Mid August 2012, an id would be great.

Blue-black leaf beetle with orange pronotum

There's plenty of leaf-beetles with this colour pattern, but all have orange legs - except, as far as I can tell, Podagrica fuscipes. Its quite a scarce species on mallows and hollyhock, but its stronghold (as judged by the leaf-beetle atlas) is in the S.E., which would fit. I have never seen this species and so I'm only offering it as a suggestion which might be worth pursuing.
