Colin, sorry to keep disagreeing with you over horseflies, but they look quite different to this - there is quite a lot of variety in the horsefly family (Tabanidae), but the typical ones have more elongate bodies, much more elongate antennae, and very different wing venation. Here's an example:
I don't recognise the fly photographed in this observation, but I suspect it is one of the Muscidae.
