A new one for me and I thought it was a stage. A rather hasty look through Chris B's damselfly gallery revealed this possible match, though it still doesn't look like a full adult

ID notes

This is form rufescens. There are 4 colours forms, rose pink, violet, green or blue. If you look at the attached link you will see some similar images.

I just hasten to add that the above is a simplified summary, it is a little more complicated than that though.

thanks Chris. So it is a full adult after all. I notice it's one of your favorites. I read as well that it's an obliging subject and tolerant of being approached. I was actually chasing an unusual dung fly which was skipping about a lot and it sat very close by throughout the whole rather chaotic proceedings. I eventually got the fly and it was still there so I took some shots. Indeed, what tends to put me off about dragonflies is their inaccessibility, so this was really nice
