Depends on the guidebook...

If you're using one of the Collins-type guides, it's important to realise that these are astoundingly incomplete, even though they're a very good place to start from. You can only fit a certain number of species into a volume, which means you need more specialist volumes in order to be comprehensive... with 4500 beetle species in the UK, and something like 60,000 species in total, no nature guidebook is going to be comprehensive at species level. There is an FSC key to this particular group of beetles, which is the only way to have an exhaustive list:

Yes fair point re the guidebook and thanks for the link. I didn't realise there were 4500 beetle species in the UK- fabulous!
