Fern Fossil

Observed: 25th May 2013 By: Annette Phillips
Fern Fossil

This is the second fossil I have found in two weeks at this site. The first I believe to be tree scales. I am trying to find out more and also how common this is. I am told the material is red shay. My friend has also found something similar today in the same location.

  • Fern Fossil
Confidence: It's likely to be this, but I can't be certain.
    Likely ID
    Alethopteris urophylla (Brongniart) Presl.
Confidence: I'm as sure as I can be.

From the location I infer ..

... that this specimen is from the Coal Measures (Upper Carboniferous). In rocks of that age you can expect to find both ferns and seed ferns; I don't know how you tell which you have here.
