Dead wasp found on the beach
No interactions present.
I was thinking Dolichovespula saxonica as there is no large yellow area on the ocular sinus and there are just 2 small spots on the metatonum.

I don't know either well, but they are variable in colour and I think the yellow 'tick' on the side of the thorax is diagnostic. See http://www.bwars.com/index.php?q=wasp/vespidae/vespinae/dolichovespula-m... and http://www.bwars.com/index.php?q=wasp/vespidae/vespinae/dolichovespula-s.... Though looking again, what I thought was the 'tick' may actually be composed of the yellow on the back of the head plus the thorax side-stripe, so maybe it is saxonica.
Thanks very much for your help
I think this is probably a very dark D. saxonica. D. media has an entirely yellow ocular sinus
