This grey stuff was growing over moss on an old log in mature woodland. Is it a fungus or a lichen? An ID?
Edit: changed to reflect Nigel's and Alan's comments. Many thanks.
Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!
Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.
No interactions present.
I'm sure this is a slime mould, because I have collected similar material hoping it was a lichen.
No idea about a genus (or slime moulds in general!). Badhamia or similar?
Any slime mould experts out there?
armed with my new French 2 volume picture book and Bruce Ing's book on these things, I think Nigel makes a good suggestion and Badhamia foliicola is a possibility.
But not my group.
Alan, many thanks for looking into this for me. I'm right out of my depth when it comes to things like this. All I'd say in my defence is that at least now I'm noticing them whereas a year or so ago I'd not have seen them at all.
