[Taken through double glazing] Sparrowhawk seen feasting on a male House Sparrow, then actually chased from the garden by a male Blackbird! Unfortunately my photos of that particular moment are worse than terrible

This is a young bird, born last year. The buff edges to the upperpart feathers and rather blotchy markings on the chest are typical of a young bird. At this age, males and females are effectively the same in plumage. I would not like to guess whether male or female for this one.

Young Sparrowhawk

Yikes. Well that's information very gratefully received. I guess I jumped in making my identification based on my knowledge of the male and maybe not considering other possibilities - there's a lesson for me. Thanks.
