I do not know what sepal appendages are so cannot differentiate.

Spur

The spur sticks out at the back of the flower and is white here as can be seen in the last 2 photos. It can also be the same colour as the rest of the flower, but in Early Dog-violet it would be darker purple than the rest. That is the best character to use after checking whether the sepals are acute (blunt in Sweet and Hairy Violets). The sepal appendages stick out backwards where the flower joins its stalk. but only really help when it is in fruit and even then are tricky!
