Grey seals

Of the two seals found around Britain only the grey has the white furred pups (except for the very odd common though these do not usually survive as common seal pups are expected to swim within six hours of being born and the white fur is not waterproof).

These pups still have their full white coat (less than 10-14 days old) but are fat and barrel shaped (over three days old) therefore, they are between 3 and 10 days old. Once the white fur has been moulted (around 14-18 days) they will hang around the beach for a week or so before going off into the sea.
