Buried in garden soil, quite bristly, with small white almost looks like polystyrene balls, but smooth skin inside suggest larva or caterpillar ?

Looks man made to me. no idea what….. a paint roller cut up prehaps?

I think this has to be artificial.
Lumps of expanded polystyrene have occasionally been posted after being mistaken for marine egg masses - easy to see when someone points it out, but the mistake is understandable. Here, the answer is less clear - a paint-roller or something similar isn't a bad suggestion.
