Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

It can be useful to wander around after strong winds. Surprising things can be brought down from the canopy.
However, once on the ground, most lichens degrade rapidly and may not be in good condition for identification. I am glad Nigel stuck his head out on this first, saving me some brain energy. (The critical features are there, but it is decidely past its best.)
